My Take Away from the CSBS...

Megan BurmesterI have always wanted to understand the bible but felt that I didn't know how. I also wanted to know God more fully and to know His character. I knew the C-SBS was the school for me because I wanted to know the "story" of the bible and the chronological approach works well for my brain. I have just completed this school and I can't tell you how much the bible has come to mean to me. It is the most beautiful story. I have come to have a greater understanding of the word and a greater love for God and His character. I have also come to know His love more deeply and He has brought healing to my soul through His word. I also know that I can understand the bible and I can teach others how to do the same. THe word of God is vital to our spiritual life and with all the surrounding influences attacking us, it is a privilege to study God's word and soak in it for nine months. I know there is much more that I will be processing over the next few months but for now, I know this school has changed my life for the better and guess what? I STILL want to read my bible, in fact, I can't wait to read it all over again!

Foundations for Life and Ministry

The Chronological School of Biblical Studies (C-SBS) is a nine-month course in which students study all 66 book of the Bible in chronological order, in effect reading the Bible through 5 times. This school takes an inductive approach, encouraging its students to observe what the text says, and allowing God's Word to shape their beliefs. C-SBS allows the Gospel story to unfold step-by-step, life-by life, as God revealed it to His people.

  • 1st Quarter - September to December 2009:
    • Part 1: The beginning of Creation; the Fall of Humanity; the Call, Redemption, and Salvation of His people; the Birth of an earthly Kingdom. (Genesis - Samuel)
    • Part 2: The Heart of the King's Wisdom. (Job, Psalms...)
  • 2nd Quarter - January to March 2010:
    • Part 1: Merciful Warnings of Judgment to a Stubborn Regime, Promises of Salvation to a Repentant Remnant, and the Downfall of a Kingdom. (Joel - Jeremiah)
    • Part 2: Rebirth of an International People, awaiting Messiah. (Ezekiel, Daniel... - Malachi)
  • 3rd Quarter - April - June 2010
    • Part 1: Messiah arrives and defeats death; fills His special people with His Spirit to redeem all peoples into His Kingdom. (Matthew, Luke/Acts, James, Galatians... - 2 Corinthians)
    • Part 2: Messiah's people worldwide endure suffering as His Kingdom of Grace spreads to all nations. (Mark, Prison Epistles... - John's books)
  • Outreach: June - August 2010

Personalized Teaching:

During the school, students survey each book and discover the big picture, while also digging into the details, paragraph by paragraph. We place an emphasis on understanding the cultural and historic background of each author and original reader of each book. In C-SBS we also consider where each book fits into the big picture of the Gospel story. Then, the student can interpret Scripture with the mindset of the original reader. Finally, that student can take those truths that transecend time and culture, and apply them to their own lives.

Foundationally, C-SBS gives its students hands-on instruction in the principles of observation, interpretation, and application. C-SBS staff will meet weekly with the students to aid in their personal growth, understanding of Scripture, and application of the inductive method.

The Calling

God can use you to impact the Nations through His Word! The Chronological School of Biblical Studies will prepare you with the tools to give God’s Word to others. First, you will develop your own convictions regarding God's holiness, faithfulness, and mercy as you study His words and His acts throughout the history of humankind. Then, you will be able to share and explain your faith to others, utilizing the stories of the people and events in the Bible.

Goals of the C-SBS School:

Our goals are to train Christians in the Word of God, and to be a multiplier for missions following Paul’s mandate in 2 Timothy 2:2; "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others."

  • To know God’s Word for yourself
  • To give God’s Word to others

Chronological School of Biblical Studies Field Assignment:

The final phase of C-SBS offers the students an opportunity to pass on Bible Study tools to others. A three to eight week outreach follows one to two weeks of training after the lecture phase. C-SBS students will have their own collection of Bible stories collected and practiced throughout the 9-months to use in evangelism and teaching.

Prerequisites

Completion of the Discipleship Training School and Field Assignment (IDS 701/702) or Crossroads Discipleship Training school (IDS 703/704).

Credits

Thirty-six (36) semester-equivalent credits will be earned upon successful completion of the School of Biblical Studies I, II, III (CCM 311/312/313). These credits may be applied to a U of N degree program or transferred to other colleges and universities.

**IMPORTANT!** C-SBS is in a different book order from standard SBS. Therefore, the transferability between the two is currently being worked out administratively with the University. Also, taking the first quarter to fulfill the U of N degree requirement would leave you with only the Law and Wisdom literature of the Old Testament. So, we are highly encouraging a commitment to all nine months of C-SBS, in order to equip you with EVERY story in the Bible, especially the substance of ALL sketches and fulfillment of ALL promises - JESUS!!!!!

Dates : September 16, 2009 – mid June, 2010
Cost : $7000 for the entire school ($2400 per quarter if paying on a quarterly basis).
