For the past couple of months, I got caught up in following his way. I began climbing the ladder of work-based religion that tells us, “read one more verse and God will love you, sing another worship song and you will get there, do this and maybe God will give you the time of day.” I got exhausted. Fast. It wasn’t until I heard God say a phrase to me that woke me up to the second captain’s way. Jesus’ way. I pray God would use this phrase and my story, to open your eyes to how Jesus is talking to you. The way He is drawing you into the deep waters of His love.

For far too long I have kept silent. I have not attempted to understand the perspective of POC and the impact that systemic racism has had on their lives. As a white man it has seemed so distant to me. Thoughts like, ‘this can’t be real’, or ‘this is not a widespread issue’ have helped me justify not examining my own heart, thinking, and ingrained prejudice. The idea that growing up in a white, middle class family in a rural mountain town wouldn’t in some way have shaped my views, felt intimidating to explore. I felt like learning about my prejudiced thinking would somehow make me less of a good person.
When God called me to missions, I laughed at what He was saying. Why would He call me to missions? My sister was the one who was called to missions, but me? No way. I wasn’t ready to step into the unknown and give up all the comfort of being home. I wasn’t ready to give up the classic college experience or the security of a good job. I wasn’t ready to depend fully on Him when it came to finances. I wasn’t ready to be constantly pushed out of my comfort and challenged to step into boldness. Nope. Maybe I heard Him wrong. Yet, God slowly and patiently kept knocking on my heart and calling me to step into the unknown with Him.

Our world is changing. Masses of people are picking up their lives and moving into cities. The cities of the world are growing at a rate of 1.6 million a week. When we think of cities, we could think of dirty streets, crowds of people, endless sin, and little to no awareness of God’s presence. Yet, God’s heart is for the cities worldwide. God is using this shift into cities as a way to bring revival, passion, and unity to His children. Will we join Him in what He is doing in cities?
Picture this, you are you, waking up in the morning excited to start your day! You find yourself playing that “Good Morning Sunshine” playlist and there’s an extra spring in your step. But how often do we really wake up like this? In reality we sit on our phones for an hour and stumble out of bed playing our 10 years of heartache playlist unable to form actual words until we have our coffee. Ouch, I’m talking to myself but I know you can relate. We should be doing things in our daily life that fill our souls to the brim. Things that make us excited to wake up in the morning.
